ABOUT THE PROJECT
Designer Katerina Churina and her team were met with a complex challenge. They were tasked with the reconstruction and redesign of an apartment in a historic building located in the heart of Amsterdam. The key consideration was to ensure that the space could accommodate guests or be rented out.
CLIENT
The apartment owner is an enthusiast of sailing, photography, and the martial art of kendo. Within the apartment's limited space, the team had to create convenient storage areas for various items, including equipment, sea route maps, photographic equipment, books, and even sails.
RESULT
To preserve the atmosphere of the old Dutch house, the original windows were retained. The initial layout lacked bathroom sinks, and there was only one toilet with a shower. Part of the space was occupied by a spiral staircase of the entrance.
Thanks to a complete redesign, the team was able to create a fully functional bathroom with a large sink and a separate toilet with a small sink. The staircase, formerly occupying part of the room, was lined with decorative "honeycomb" tiles.
A monochromatic, timeless interior in black and white tones was chosen. Natural wood gives the atmosphere a sense of warmth and comfort.
The main problem was the small and non-standard sizes of each zone. For instance, the narrow and long kitchen could not accommodate all the necessary appliances. The solution was to create custom-designed, adjacent furniture constructions for the kitchen and bedroom.
Thanks to these constructions, the kitchen was able to accommodate an oven and a drawer for storing dishes, part of the furniture is built into the headboard of the bed beyond the wall. The small bedroom is done in black to create an illusion of depth in space. The bed is equipped with a lifting mechanism for additional storage. This compact furniture set was meticulously designed by Churina Design and manufactured under our supervision.
